The Opera Company presents "Mary/Maria: The Sacred and Secular Purcell and Monteverdi".

The Opera Company and friends present a winter concert inspired by Henry Purcell's dramatic scena for Mary, The Blessed Virgin's Expostulation. Both Purcell and Monteverdi were masters of opera as well as music for church. Songs from Monteverdi's Sacri Canti and Purcell's Harmonia Sacra use the same rhetorical devices found in songs and duets written for the court and theater.

Performing at this concert:

- Jenny Haworth, soprano • Kirsten Hedegaard, soprano
- Tom Crawford, countertenor • William Bouvel, tenor • Oliver Camacho, tenor
- Dan Richardson, bass-baritone
- Phillip Serna, viola da gamba • Mark Shuldiner, harpsichord • Joel Spears, theorbo

$15 per ticket, available at the door. Children under 16 are free. To order tickets or for more information, call 847.543.1202. As always at the Byron Colby Barn, you may BYOB.

The Byron Colby Barn is located at 1561 Jones Point Road in Grayslake.
Directions: From I-94, exit Route 120 west. Drive about 4.5 miles. At the intersection with Route 45, turn left (south). Turn right at the next light, which is Jones Point Road. The Barn and parking will be on your left.

Meetup Organizer's Note: Hi Group! Since many of us are getting busy with the upcoming festivities, thought I'd slide in a quick, inexpensive and convenient event for us next week. This performance will be in "concert opera" format, which is generally not staged (but sometimes costumed). I have high praise for the venue, which is perfect for chamber music and concert opera events.

FYI... this is one of six concerts in this season's "Early Music Series" at the Byron Colby Barn. A link to the entire series is included below. If you are a fan of baroque or renaissance works performed with period instruments, this is where you ned to spend some Sunday afternoons!

As always, RSVPs are appreciated... and the "Not this time" answers are just as important as the "I'll be there" ones. Please email if you have any questions, or if you have coments to share with the group about the works, the performers, or the venue.

See you there!

2nd auditorium added due to demand!

Meet up at the Regal Cinemas in Lincolnshire for an afternoon videocast of "Turandot", a live matinee performance from the Metropolitan Opera in NY. This will be a lavish spectacular, staged as only the Met can do. Speaking of staging, these HD Videocasts are staged with the global viewing audience in mind... there will be perspectives and camera angles that no NY audience member could EVER enjoy! Remember also that there will be start-up narrative about the production, interviews with the performers during scene changes, live shots of back-stage action and more.

From the Met website: "Director Franco Zeffirelli’s breathtaking production of Puccini’s last opera is a favorite of the Met repertoire. Maria Guleghina plays the ruthless Chinese princess of the title, whose hatred of men is so strong that she has all suitors who can’t solve her riddles beheaded. Marcello Giordani sings Calàf, the unknown prince who eventually wins her love and whose solos include the famous “Nessun dorma.”

Running time: 3 hours 21 minutes, 2 intermissions

We have the option of meeting beforehand for a light brunch, or getting together afterwards to discuss the performance; we can discuss which to do via email as the date gets closer.

For those who want to catch this performance, but have to miss the live videocast, the recorded "encore" performance (indistinguishable from the live) will be Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Meet up at the Regal Cinemas in Lincolnshire for an afternoon videocast of "Tosca", a live matinee performance from the Metropolitan Opera in NY. This is good production for opera beginners and "newbies", considered one of the basics if you can only see a few. If you're not familiar with the story... it IS a bit of a tragedy. Also a love story... the bad guy doesn't get the girl!

From the Met website: "Tosca tells the story of three people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of police—caught in a net of love and politics. Soprano Karita Mattila, recently seen in last season’s Live in HD presentation of Salome, sings the title role for the first time outside her native Finland. Luc Bondy, acclaimed for his imaginative theater and opera productions, directs. The cast also includes Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi and George Gagnidze as Scarpia. Joseph Colaneri conducts."

Running time: 3 hours, 35 minutes. 2 intermissions.

We have the option of meeting beforehand for a light brunch, or getting together afterwards to discuss the performance; we can discuss which to do via email as the date gets closer.

Enjoy an informal evening of "dinner on the lawn" at the Ravinia Festival grounds, followed by a world-class performance of Verdi's "Rigoletto", featuring Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the title role. This will be a "concert" performance, meaning little-to-no staging movement or costuming.

- $20 option: You can bring your own lawn/beach chairs and pack your own dinner, or rent chairs from a Ravinia vendor and purchase dinner on the grounds once you're there. In true Ravinia form, we'll claim a space, spread the blankets and break out the goodies. The park opens at 5PM, so there's plenty of time to get set up, settled in, and stuffed before the performance begins at 7:30PM. Lawn seating usually means listening-only, but Ravinia management has put up some large screens on the lawn on which to project live imagery.

- $95 option: Seating in the (covered) Pavillion. Guaranteed good seats, especially if it rains. Unobstructed view of the stage, orchestra and performers. Chatting with your pals during the performance is discouraged in the Pavillion.

Possible additional costs: There is a $10/car parking fee for parking at the Ravinia lot. Park-N-Ride from remote lots is free, with shuttle buses willing to accomodate picnic gear. Metra's Union Pacific North Line stops right at Ravinia's Main Gate, and offers a $5 all-weekend pass. Being able to purchase admission in person at the Ravinia Box office at least one day prior to the event will save you from paying ticket surcharges.

This is a great opportunity to meet with other members of this group in a low-stress setting, followed by an evening of opera where you can get up and go to the bathroom whenever you darn well want to!

If you need a Wednesday evening alternative to "I Survived a Japanese Game Show", enjoy a special Encore performance of the Metropolitan Opera performing Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). This is the last summer videocast before the 2009-2010 season begins. Showing in Lincolnshire and Barrington.

http://www.ncm.com/Fathom/Opera/Met_TheBarber_Enc.aspx

One of the most beloved operatic comedies of all time, The Barber of Seville is presented in a production by Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher. An instant audience favorite at its 2006 Metropolitan Opera premiere, it was first seen on the big screen in March 2007 as part of the Met’s Live in HD series. Superstar tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Count Almaviva is joined by American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Rosina and Peter Mattei in the title role of the swaggering barber. Subtitled in English.

"Music by the Lake" (MBTL) is a Ravinia-like outdoor venue, an open-air pavilion right on the beautiful shores of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay - just across the lake from the town of Lake Geneva. This is their 9th season of bringing world-class entertainment to the area, just a short drive outside the NW corner of Lake County.

From the MBTL website: "Following on the heels of our effervescent "Die Fledermaus" in 2008, Puccini's poignant "Madama Butterfly" will break your heart, and thrill you with a moving story of love and loss. A remarkable young cast will make the saga of an American navy lieutenant and a young Japanese geisha in a star-crossed romance, come alive as never before. Our lakeside location, as on the shores of Lake Nagasaki, will transport you to another time and place where the weeping cherry blooms."

Two performances: Saturday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 19 at 4 p.m. Our Meetup is tentatively scheduled for the former, but based on your input between now and then we can shift it to the latter on Sunday. Please feel free to discuss this with the group so we can get an idea of preference as mid-July gets closer.

There's even a special "Taste of Asia" dinner featuring an Asian menu prepared by a guest chef prior to each performance. What's more, MBTL is offering a 10% discount on group tickets, which might help sway some of you! (Need enough of us to make a "group", of course.)

The opera season usually has a solid break during the summer months, so this presents a great opportunity for us. The captivating story is also one that is a great fit for a wide range of opera-goers. We were looking at the occasional out-of-county "field trip" for operas... here we go!

The Tenors 3 present "Fun with Opera and Beyond!"

The Tenors 3 are a trio of classically trained tenor vocalists performing Opera, Operetta and Broadway music (enchanted with a light touch of comedy), presented in Lake County's newest venue, the superb Cultural and Civic Center in Round Lake Beach.

Based in Chicago's western suburbs, the tenors have individually shared their talents with area audiences for years as soloists and members of vocal ensembles with prestigious organizations including The Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Florentine Opera and the Elgin Choral Union. Establishing themselves as a group in 2006, they have since performed throughout the Midwest to great acclaim for their singing and showmanship.

Those of us who get there early can meet-and-mingle in the the spacious interior lobby, then proceed into the auditorium which seats up to 500 in theatre-style seating. After the show anyone interested can enjoy an early dinner at any of several nearby eateries, or choose a specific establishment in advance (now taking names).

Tickets at the door are $12 for adults and $11 for seniors and children. Early-bird discount of $1 off per ticket if purchased prior to April 03 @ 5pm. All tickets may be purchased at the venue, which is handicap-accessible and has ample parking.

For additional information, contact the Cultural and Civic Center during normal business hours or click HERE for the event flyer .

We hope you will attend, and look forward to meeting several of you there!

Saturday, Feb 28, 2009 @ 8PM (Doors open at 7:30PM)
Tickets: $25/adults. Tickets may be purchased at the Jack Benny Center and on-line at TicketMaster.com, for pick-up at the Will-Call desk the night of the performance.

Details: Don Alfonso, an old philosopher and cynic, is determined to prove to his two young friends, Guglielmo and Ferrando, that their fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are not to be trusted like any other woman. With the help of Despina, the ladies' maid, Alfonso lays his plot. First he tells them that as officers, their lovers have been called up on duty; and as a part of the old man's plan, he introduces the sisters to two Albanians, who are, of course, Guglielmo and Ferrando disguised. After inner conflicts the two women succumb to the advances of the "Albanians," forcing Guglielmo and Ferrando to concede defeat. However, Don Alfonso reveals the plot to the two deceived ladies and they are reconciled with their original lovers.

As the event approaches, we'll discuss local establishments where those who are interested can meet in advance for an informal dinner, or rendezvous afterwards to discuss the performance.

This opera will run for two consecutive weekends (February 27, 28, March 1, 6, 7, and 8), with Fri/Sat performances at 8PM and Sunday matinees at 3PM. If you have a preference... please speak up!
