Enjoy a comic opera in the intimate setting of the Dr. Lynn Schornick Theatre at the Jack Benny Center for the Performing Arts in Waukegan.
This performance is Donizetti's "Elixir of Love" by Donizetti.
Saturday, March 01, 2008 @ 8PM (Doors open at 7:30PM)
Tickets: $25/adults. Tickets may be purchased on-line at Ticketweb.com, for pick-up at the Will-Call desk the night of the performance.
Details: The country bumpkin Nemorino loves the village beauty Adina. She possesses a bit of money, education and sophistication, whose lack he laments, feeling that it creates an impassable gulf. His redeeming quality of complete and untutored honesty makes him both victim of charlatanry and ultimate victor in amore. Doctor Dulcamara, a patent-oil salesman peddling the "Elixir of Love" and Sergeant Belcore, a narcissistic recruitment officer breeze into town to fill out the cast of hilariously colorful characters. The beauty of this favorite opera lies in the balance between naïveté and depth in its sunny narration of requited love... all of which will come to life on the intimacy of the small stage.
The Stage Director for Bowen Park Opera is Kathryn Kamp, a mainstay in the area performing arts community. She has appeared as a soloist at many of the premier venues of the Midwest, including Orchestra Hall at Chicago Symphony Center, the Ravinia Festival, the Peninsula Music Festival, and the Grant Park Music Festival. She has recently been heard in Sondheim roles at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Muddy River Opera, and is a frequent soloist at Broadway pops concerts in the Chicago area. That not being enough to fill her plate, Kathryn is also a member of "Chicago a cappella" and records regularly with Hinshaw Music.
As the event approaches, we'll discuss local establishments where those who are interested can meet in advance for an informal dinner, or rendezvous afterwards to discuss the performance.
