Meet up at the Regal Cinemas in Lincolnshire for an afternoon videocast of "Tosca", a live matinee performance from the Metropolitan Opera in NY. This is good production for opera beginners and "newbies", considered one of the basics if you can only see a few. If you're not familiar with the story... it IS a bit of a tragedy. Also a love story... the bad guy doesn't get the girl!

From the Met website: "Tosca tells the story of three people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of police—caught in a net of love and politics. Soprano Karita Mattila, recently seen in last season’s Live in HD presentation of Salome, sings the title role for the first time outside her native Finland. Luc Bondy, acclaimed for his imaginative theater and opera productions, directs. The cast also includes Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi and George Gagnidze as Scarpia. Joseph Colaneri conducts."

Running time: 3 hours, 35 minutes. 2 intermissions.

We have the option of meeting beforehand for a light brunch, or getting together afterwards to discuss the performance; we can discuss which to do via email as the date gets closer.

For those who want to catch this performance, but have to miss the live videocast, the recorded "encore" performance (indistinguishable from the live) will be Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Kirsten, you're absolutely right. For the last opera I went to at this venue, I got to the auditorium 20 minutes early, thinking I had plenty of time to get a good seat. I walked in to a full auditorium, and had to grab a seat near the wall up front. I will carry a 5"x8" Meetup sign, and once I lay claim to a seat will loiter near the door to the auditorium. I'm picking up my ticket Friday, so I won't have to wait in line. I'm also willing to exchange cell phone numbers via email.

How will we recognize each other? I want to go in for a seat pretty much as soon as I get there, rather than wait in the lobby area too long.... Thoughts?

    •  Extraordinary singing; superb orchestral playing. I was mesmerized by the Met performance and happy to have gone to the Lincolnshire location (..brief satellite glitch aside.) Great company in the meetup group! What a fun Saturday!

What a GREAT way to start a season! Despite a minor tech glitch at the beginning (about which we were forewarned by theatre staff), the opera itself was flawless; the experience of watching it with new friends just topped it off. I arrived at 11AM for a noon showing; already over 100 people in line! The audience was seasoned opera fans; not a single cell phone or other gadget disprupted the performance. The sound and comfort levels in the auditorium were perfect, the concession stand just outside in the lobby, and two well-placed intermissions. Can't get much better!
    •  I really cannot find a negative with this experience. Metropolitan Opera, videocast live to 42 countries at the same time....too cool. For $22 ($24 if you used the Fandango service) you can watch a beautiful, world-class performance, in the convenience of (hopefully) a convenient theater (for me it was), and movie theater popcorn! The audience was just as respectful as they would be in the auditorium of the Lincoln Center.
